Our Story

Our caring veterinarians and staff are committed to providing your companion animals with the best quality of medical care possible.

We’ve been in business for over 30 years and continually strive to provide the most up-to-date medicine with state-of-the-art equipment for your animals. Innovative electronic record-keeping provides immediate access to your animal’s medical history, and our modern facilities and caring staff allow for a clean and friendly environment.

All staff participates in continuing education programs which, combined with the above, enables us to reach our goal of providing the ultimate level of care for your animal. We offer veterinary services for a wide range of animals, including cats and dogs.

Dr. Megan Trauba

Dr. Megan Trauba joined the Grantsburg Animal Hospital & Wild River Veterinary Clinic in October of 2018. She received her bachelors of Animal Science from the University of Wisconsin River Falls. Then she attended the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine and graduated in 2015.
Dr. Megan enjoys all aspects of small animal practice but has developed special interests in dentistry, internal medicine, behavior and geriatric care. She has a passion for caring for animals and nurturing the human animal bond. She lives in Braham with her daughter Grace, her two golden retrievers (Huck & Finley) and her two cats (Scarlett and Trooper). In her spare time, she enjoys horseback riding, crafting and playing with her dogs.

Q: Who is someone that you admire and why?
A: Dr. Kirsten Frederickson, She was my horse veterinarian growing up. She is who inspired me to continue on the path of becoming a veterinarian. She is the most hardworking and kind person I know.

A: Hardworking, passionate, kind-hearted
Q: What would people find surprising about you?
A: I played piano for 10 years during grade school. Though I do not play anymore, I have a goal to eventually start playing again.

A: Equine (Horse) veterinarian

A: Loving mother –animal lover –passionate about caring for people and animals
Q: What is your most memorable travel experience?
A: Traveling to Costa Rica and Nicaragua for 1 month to provide veterinary care to the areas of Needed.

A: Graduating veterinary school, putting on a fundraiser to raise money for Acres for Life, a non-profit organization.

dr.laura
Dr. Laura Aasen (DVM)

Dr. Laura has lived and worked in east central Minnesota for most of her life. She attended the University of Wisconsin in River Falls before entering the University of Minnesota – School of Veterinary Medicine. Many veterinarian hopefuls still attend UWRF because of its excellent Animal Science background to prepare for vet school. Dr. Laura moved to the Owen and Withee area in Wisconsin shortly after graduating, worked as a mixed animal veterinarian. She enjoys meeting new people and their pets. Dr. Laura worked for many years at two nearby clinics doing large and small animal medicine and emergency work. Veterinarians use an animal’s behavior and daily routine changes to figure out what is affecting them whether their large or small animals. Dr. Laura got to work with very talented, caring and supportive individuals in the veterinary field.

A: I get to meet new people to learn from and admire every day.

A: I remember visiting my mom’s relatives in South Dakota for a few days in the summer. We always traveled by car usually with no air conditioning and had all the windows rolled down blowing hot air over us 4 kids.

A: My marriage, my son and my veterinary degree

A: If I’m not working I can be found napping or reading a good mystery book.

emily luukkonen
Emily Luukkonen (Certified Veterinary Technician)
I started my veterinary career in 2001 cleaning kennels and the office at Northland Animal Hospital. The next 3 years I gained vet assistant skills. I attended school in 2004 at Duluth Business University while working at Friends of Animals Humane Society. I graduated in 2006 with an Associate of Applied Science in veterinary technology. I passed national and state board and was certified. I moved to Colorado Springs and worked at Cheyne Mountain Animal Hospital. I moved back to Minnesota after my daughter was born and worked for Animal Humane Society in Coon Rapids. I started working for Grantsburg Animal Hospital/Wild River Vet Clinic in March of 2010. Gained a Wisconsin license in 2012. Over the last 11 years I have worked at both locations through the many changes and became a lead tech. I look forward to the future of this wonderful practice.

erica lumsden
Erica Lumsden (Certified Veterinary Technician)
Erica worked 3 years as a kennel assistant before graduating a semester early at St Croix Falls High School in 2016. She took a year break working in a factory before moving to Nebraska to get my Associates Degree in 2020. Erica interned at Grantsburg Animal Hospital and Burnett County Humane Society for 2 months. She passed her boards exam and became a Certified Veterinary Technician at the end of 2020.

Courtney Schmeling (Certified Veterinary Technician)
Following graduation for Hinckley-Finlayson High School, Courtney attended UW-River Falls where she got a Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Science. Courtney earned her Associate’ Degree at Rochester Community & Technical College. She was a technician intern at Blue Pearl in Rochester and here at Grantsburg Animal Hospital and Wild River Vet Clinic to complete my schooling as a tech. Courtney was offered a position here upon completing her internship and has worked here since. Courtney enjoys working in the veterinary field because she gets to see a wide variety of cases and help the pets who need us.

I graduated from Frederic High School in 2015. I attended college for nursing then started working in the vet field. I was an Assistant for 1 year and then as a technician for 2 years. I LOVE being in the vet filed. I enjoy working as a tech because I believe animals should be shown the same compassion, love as shown to us. In my younger days I was a certified Toddler Teacher for a Parent Child Center. I worked at Frederic Ben Franklin for 13 years and I’ve been at Grantsburg Animal Hospital for 27 years. For me all animals are my best friends, especially my 2 Labrador Retrievers Cabela & Sadie.

Growing up I always had pets. I did several years of volunteer work with different animal rescues. I enjoy seeing the variety of pets and people coming into the clinic. I have a log of pets so it’s nice to work at a clinic to keep up with pet health. In high school I attended 2 years of Animal Science at 916 Century College. Otherwise, I’ve been working in the manufacturing industry for 20 years, along with part-time front desk at veterinary clinics for the past 5 years.

I graduated from Minnesota School of Business with an Associate’s Degree in Applied Science. I became a CVT in 2014. I’ve worked at the Animal Humane Society since 2012 and Wild River Vet Clinic since 2017. I started working at Northwoods Humane Society this year.
